The changes in the floristic composition and the loss of forage production and plant cover of the grasslands in the mountains of our country reflects the degradation process that they suffer. Therefore, the key to grassland monitoring is the development of instruments that allow a more precise and rapid estimation of these parameters. One of the most used by the Range Management Society has been the census ring, one inch in diameter, developed by Parker (1951) to estimate the condition and trend of rangelands (Parker 1954). This ring allows evaluating the floristic composition of the field in a 30 meter-long radial transect. However, with the development of new technologies based on the use of remote sensors and ecological models to estimate forage production, new instruments have also been developed such as the Modified Point Framework to evaluate the floristic composition of the field in 200 m transects. This information is used by the PHYGROW Model (Phytomass Growth Simulator) to develop a vegetation sub model that ultimately estimates forage production. The objective of this study was to compare two sampling instruments to estimate conservation status indicators such as floristic composition, diversity, percentage of basal cover, mulch, bare soil, and invasive plants (perennials and annuals), as well as cost-efficiency in tussock grasslands, short grass, and Andean wetlands of the central mountains. The evaluations were conducted on 46 transects installed in 2015 in grasslands in five regions of the central highlands: Canchayllo (Junín), Cordillera Blanca (Huaraz), Santa Ana (Huancavelica), San Pedro de Racco (Pasco) and Tomas (Lima). The results reveal that in both tussock and short grasslands there is a predominance of grasses, while in Andean wetlands the predominance is given by herbaceous plants. However, these values are similar for both evaluation instruments (p > 0.05). Regarding diversity, significant differences were only found in the number of species and perennial species in tussock and short grasslands; where the modified punctual framework provided us with higher values than those of the Parker census ring, otherwise the opposite occurred in Andean wetlands, where no significant differences were found. Likewise, it can be seen with respect to the percentage of basal coverage, mulch and bare soil, no significant differences were found for any of the measuring instruments; while, in the percentage of basal, invasive, mulch and bare soil plants, no significant differences were found for any of the measurement instruments; while, in the percentage of invasive, perennial plants, there were significant differences (p < 0.05) for the evaluation instruments. On the contrary, in the case of evaluation time, the results indicate highly significant differences (p < 0.01) for the 3 types of vegetation under study (Tussock grassland, short grassland and Andean wetland), tending to be better; for the shortest time spent; Parker's sensing ring. However, the cost-efficiency indicator did not show significant statistical differences (p > 0.05).
