The aim of this research was to evaluate the assimilation of TAN under two strategies of carbon supply in biofloc systems for the culture of fry tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in a greenhouse for 55 days. The first strategy consisted in the adding of carbon as part of formulated feed (30 percent of protein), with a C/N ratio of 10.8 (T1). In the second strategy, molasses was added to the system to complement the feed carbon (35 percent and 40 percent of protein in T2 and T3 respectively) to reach the C/N ratio of 10.8. One hundred and fifty fingerlings (0.8 + 0.2 g average weight) were stocked in each of the nine tanks, three for each treatment, with 350 L of biofloc. Throughout the experimentation, adequate levels of oxygen (6.72 + 0.34mg/L), pH (7.74 + 0.10), alkalinity (75-100 mg CaCO3/L) and temperature (28.26 + 0.65 °C) for the BFT system and tilapia culture were maintained. Nitrites (N-NO2), nitrates (NNO3) and TAN; 0.09 mg/L, 88.26 mg/L and 1.99 mg/L respectively, remained stable and in concentrations that not affected tilapia. Only significant differences occurred in the concentration of TAN between treatments, being higher in T3 (2.23 + 0.41mg / L) compared to T1 (1.8 + 0.44 mg / L). On the other hand the growth of fish was directly affected by the percentage of protein feed used in each treatment, reaching the highest biomass in the T3 (778.7 + 63.2 g) and the lowest in T1 (507.8 + 18.2 g). Using the C/N ratio of the feed (30 percent) turned out to be suitable to control the levels of TAN and avoid expenses by purchasing of additional carbon sources such as molasses.
