In many small watersheds of the biosphere reserve Huascaran National Park there are grazing activities by peasant communities´ livestock. The study objective was to evaluate rangeland condition and stocking rate in Ulta creek to propose compensatory strategies in its buffer zone, because of grazing pressure reduction within the park. Rangeland condition was estimated through species classification by desirability for cattle, plant cover and species vigor in 29 step-transects. Stocking rate was calculated by productivity method and current load based on number of animals reported in annual rodeos; both variables were compared to determine overgrazing. The buffer zone, located Shilla district, was assessed through a “rapid assessment survey“ to determine land use categories that were later systematically translated in a map. In addition, the compensatory strategies were formulated based on the principles of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to stop environmental deterioration, articulate conservation policies and improve the living standards of the communities. Results revealed that rangeland of Ulta were in poor condition due the dominance of undesirable (24.8%) and less desirable species (52.9%) with a range of cover between 50 to 95%. Stocking rate of Ulta was 69.89 AU, while the current load was 183.83 AU, that is, there is a process of rangeland degradation that causes the loss of native forage species, decrease of vegetation cover and floristic diversity. The buffer zone covers an area of 1298.36 hectare, where 49.17% is available to potential agricultural use, 30.81% is rocky outcrop, 12.07% forest area, 6.19% agricultural use, 1.72% rest area and 0.04% is for fish farming. The proposed compensation strategies for reducing grazing pressure are literacy and awareness programs, as well as capacity building (empowering women's work, commercialization and use of agricultural land) that promote projects aimed to conservation and sustainable use of its natural resources by the community.
