The use of plants to provide resources (nectar, pollen, altemative host/prey and shelter) to natural pest enemies is called habitat management, a growing branch of conservation biological control strategy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diversity of the entomofauna associated with 15 plant species, grouped in three plant shelters, adjacent to com crop (cv. PM-303) in Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina (UNALM) Lima, Perú. Shelters with pre-selected and managed seedbed seedlings were settled a week before the com was planted. Assessments of the entomofauna, in shelters and com, were evaluated at weekly intervals, from the phenological phase of slow growth to physiological maturity of the crop. Larger insects wére recorded by direct observation, whereas the smaller ones were collected by using a net, making with it three swept above the vegetal layer. The identification of specimens was worked out in K. Raven Museum (UNALM). The plant shelters, adjacent to com, have the highest diversity of insects, represented by eight orders, 60 families and 74 genera; Hymenoptera and Hemiptera were the most diverse and abundant orders. The entomofauna associated to shelters corresponds to four functional groups: predators, parasitoids, pollinators, and herbivores; predators and parasitoids being the most abundant and diverse, respectively. A shelter formed by Gossypium barbadense, Aster sp., Foeniculum vulgare, Coriandrum sativum, and Lavandula officinalis hosted the greatest diversity and abundance of entomofauna sampled, compared with shelters B (Helianthus annus, Nicandra physaloides, Salvia officinalis, Bidens pilosa, and Artemisia absinthium) and e (Malva parviflora, Rosmarinus officinalis, Phaseolus vulgaris, Galinsoga parviflora and Sorghum halepense ). Population fluctuation of the entomofauna associated to shelters and com was different among them; in shelters, fluctuation presented population peaks that relate to their flowering and fruiting stages; whereas in com, the population fluctuation and its peaks were associated with slow growth and flowering stages. Finally, among the test plants G. barbadense and F. vulgare of shelter A, B. pilosa and N physaloides of shelter B, and M parviflora of shelter e, can be recommended, either alone or in combination, to potentially promote biological control in the com agroecosystem in La Molina due to the diversity and abundance of natural enemies associated with them, and for their high levels of similarity among them.
