The increase in overweight, obesity and because of aesthetic interest rather than healthy stability, motivate people to go to the gyms where is it sold solutions to achieve the desired weight and characteristics; however, a correct evaluation of body composition is omitted. Currently, it is evaluated through the Body Mass Index (BMI), an inaccurate and limited method, which classifies without discriminating fat mass of lean mass. Moreover, Abdominal Obesity (AO) is considered a better index and greater predictor than BMI to measure cardiovascular risk. However, since 2011, there is a simple method called Body Adipose Index (BAI) that requires the height and the circumference size of the hip to calculate the fat percentage, discriminating fat mass of lean mass. Therefore, the objective of this observational, cross-sectional and correlational investigation was to determine the relationship between BMI and BAI with OA in gym users in the Cercado de Lima district in Lima Peru, to contribute to a better diagnosis. The population composed of 83 people between 18 and 52 years of age who entered the nutritional program, did not exceed the month of attendance at the gym and performed moderate physical activity 2 to 4 times a week; data was collected according to the «Technical guide for the anthropometric nutritional assessment of the adult, Minsa 2012». It was observed that there is a significant linear relationship in the parameters BMI, BAI and AO, where the BAI as a predictor of AO is better than the BMI. The linear dependence between the BMI and the OA did not show marked differences between sexes; otherwise, it occurred in the relationship between the BAI and the AO, in which despite having an outstanding linear relationship, men showed greater trends in AO than women at different levels of the BAI.
