One of the main soil degradation processes is salinity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the application of chemical and organic amendments as alternatives to mitigate the harmful effects of salinity in rice in the soils of the San Jacinto de Yaguachi canton, Ecuador. The investigation began with the physical and chemical analysis of the soil and irrigation water; for soil with georeference, sampling points were established, and water samples were chosen in the irrigation canals. The production systems were established through the application of a survey. The tested amendments were leonardite, gypsum, vinasse, compost, sugarcane cakefilter and pig manure. The morphology and yield of five rice varieties, INIAPFL-Arenillas, SFL 011, INIAP 14, INIAP 11 and Fedearroz 60, were evaluated under a randomized complete block with split plots design. Analysis showed that the clayey texture is predominant in these soils, with medium levels of salinity. High amounts of chlorine were found in the irrigation water, with severe restrictions on its use. Three rice production systems were found among farmers; and the morphology of the plants and varieties yield increased with the applications of compost, filtercake and leonardite, as well as the concentration of N, K, Ca, S and P. The rice varieties subjected to a salinity level of 7.44 dS m-1 and applying leonardite, showed significant statistical differences in plant height, number of tillers, panicles, grains per panicle, and 1000 grains weight. It is emphasized that using 150 kg ha-1 leonardite, the rice varieties presented higher yields. The use of organic amendments is recommended, which due to their favorable physical, chemical and biological conditions, are useful in improving soils irrigated with saline waters.
