In Perú, cacao (Theobroma cacao) cultivation has been expanding as an alternative to coca cultivation. However, environmental catastrophes such as the increasing drought around the world and unfavorable predictions of the future shortage of cocoa due to water deficiency require the recognition and development of varieties that use this supplied. Therefore, the objective of the current research was to explain the adaptive capacity of the native variety of cacao Porcelana de Piura (PP), traditionally cultivated in conditions with short water supply. The physiological and molecular response of PP was evaluated and compared with the varieties ICS_1 and POUND_7 (P7), which were tolerant and susceptible to water stress (WS), respectively. Results showed that the variety PP was the less affected by the WS treatment, resulting in less effect in parameters leaf water potential differential (△Ψw = 2.07) and maximum photochemical efficiency differential (△Fv/Fm = -0.023) than varieties ICS_1(△Ψw = 7.06 y △Fv/Fm = 0.042) and P7 (△Ψw = 3.62 y △Fv/Fm = -0.017). Also, the reduction and increase of the stomatal area (A) and density (D), respectively, shows more efficient stomata to respond the WS treatment by variety PP. In conclusion, the expression of the HAI-1 and PLIP2 genes, allowed protect and regulate more efficiently the response of PP to WS.
