The aim of this study was to determine the effect of flaxseed oil as a PUFA source on the UCP3 gene expression in rats induced to obesity. Twenty four adult male Holztman rats of the UNALM bioterium were used. The experimental phase consisted of 2 stages. In the first phase (30 days), the rats received an obesogenic diet to induce obesity and the c-HDL parameters were evaluated with the Student's test for paired samples and the level of triglycerides with the non-parametric Wilcoxon test, determining that only triglyceride levels had significant difference. In the second phase (59 days), 12 rats received obesogenic diet and the other 12 rats received the same modified diet plus flaxseed oil orally (1 ml/kg b.w); however, no significant differences were observed in the concentrations of c-HDL or triglycerides. Finally, the UCP3 mRNA expression was evaluated by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) in muscle tissue, finding that UCP3 gene expression was expressed 4 times more in the treatment group (flaxseed oil) than in the control group, showing significant differences with the Student's test. It was concluded that the supplementation with omega 3 rich flaxseed oil plays an important role in the UCP3 gene expression in rats that received an obesogenic diet.
