The present thesis aims to evaluate grain yield, plant characteristics, and cob traits, as well as to determine the simple correlations among the various studied traits of two groups of experimental double hybrids of Hard Yellow Corn and their respective controls. These evaluations were conducted in trials carried out in the district of La Molina, province of Lima, during the agricultural campaign 2002-2003. The experimental design for both trials was a Randomized Complete Block Design with 10 treatments and four replications. In trial 1, 8 experimental double hybrids were tested, formed with the Cuba race and the Perla race, including 2 commercial hybrids as controls. In trial 2, 7 experimental double hybrids were tested, formed with lines from CIMMYT and lines of the Cuba race, including 3 commercial hybrids as controls. In trial 1, the experimental double hybrids and the controls were similar in grain yield and cob length; the lowest plant height and cob height were found in DK-834; PM-302 stood out with a stem diameter of 2.48 cm; DK-834 was the earliest in both female and male flowering dates; 478x477 showed the widest cob diameter. Grain yield showed a direct correlation with stem diameter and cob height, and an inverse correlation with male flowering days. In trial 2, the control AG-612 with 11772 kg/ha, and the experimental hybrid (484x483) with 10386.4 kg/ha, had the highest yield; DK-834 and C-701 had the lowest plant height, and C-701 had the lowest cob height; DK-834 had the widest stem diameter and was the earliest; 483x484 had the largest cob diameter, and 488x487 had the longest cob length. Grain yield had a direct association with stem diameter.
