Unemployment insurance effect on labor markets is a phenomenon widely analyzed in the search and matching literature. However, most research focuses on its impact on unemployment duration, with mixed results, while analysis of its influence on working conditions remains scant, especially for developing countries. In Peru, there is still no unemployment insurance system, although there are initiatives to implement it by the Government and international entities. Because Peru is characterized by high levels of labor informality, which limits access to the unemployment insurance system in South American countries that already have this system, it constitutes a special case study. For this reason, this document aims to analyze the potential effect of accessing unemployment insurance on formal salary levels in Peru using the model proposed by Pissarides (2000). A positive impact is expected due to the direct increase in reservation wages and the greater intensity of job search among less-skilled workers. Also, the effect is expected to increase among unionized workers, given their greater bargaining power vis-à-vis employers.
