Resumen: Se conoce como spread bancario a la diferencia entre los ingresos percibidos por actividades de intermediación y los pagos realizados a las fuentes de fondeo. En el Perú, la banca ha ofrecido, tanto a las empresas del sector privado como al público en general, tasas de interés heterogéneas al interior de cada segmento de mercado que atiende (crédito corporativo, gran y mediana empresa, pequeña y micro empresa, hipotecario y consumo), un hecho que ha suscitado disconformidad debido a las altas tasas a las que tienen acceso las personas naturales y las micro y pequeñas empresas. Es en ese sentido que se realizó una revisión de la literatura existente para el período comprendido entre 1991 y 2018 (antes de la crisis sanitaria covid-19) con el fin de entender los factores que explican los niveles de margen financiero en el Perú. Resultado del ejercicio se encontró que los principales determinantes del spread son factores microeconómicos tales como el riesgo de crédito, los costos operativos, el nivel de liquidez de las entidades financieras y la participación de mercado. Si bien en algunos estudios se encontraron factores macroeconómicos, como la inflación, que explican el spread financiero, el impacto es reducido y se alega que esto puede ser resultado del adecuado manejo macroeconómico realizado por el Banco Central de Reserva del Perú (BCRP) a partir de la década de los años 90 cuando se promovieron políticas liberales frente a las anteriores medidas de control de tasas de interés.
Commercial bank interest margin is the difference between income perceived from intermediation operations and payments to depositors and other funding sources. In Peru, banks and other financial institutions have offered to the private sector and retail clients, a heterogeneous set of interest rate within each market segment (corporate, large and medium enterprises, SME, mortgage credit and retail credit) that aroused dissatisfaction due to the high levels of interest rates to which SMEs and retail clients have access. Because of this a literature review for the period between 1991 and 2018 (before the current covid-19 crisis) was conducted to further understand the factors that explain the levels of interest margin witnessed in Peru. As a result of this exercise, it was found that the main determinants of the banking spread are microeconomic factors such as credit risk, operating costs, liquidity levels of financial entities and market share. Although some authors have found macroeconomic factors, such as inflation, to be part of the explanation, their impact is quite limited, possibly because of the adequate macroeconomic management done by the Central Bank of Peru (BCRP) since the 1990’s after more liberal interest rate measures were fostered and undertaken.
