Commercial bank interest margin is the difference between income perceived from intermediation operations and payments to depositors and other funding sources. In Peru, banks and other financial institutions have offered to the private sector and retail clients, a heterogeneous set of interest rate within each market segment (corporate, large and medium enterprises, SME, mortgage credit and retail credit) that aroused dissatisfaction due to the high levels of interest rates to which SMEs and retail clients have access. Because of this a literature review for the period between 1991 and 2018 (before the current covid-19 crisis) was conducted to further understand the factors that explain the levels of interest margin witnessed in Peru. As a result of this exercise, it was found that the main determinants of the banking spread are microeconomic factors such as credit risk, operating costs, liquidity levels of financial entities and market share. Although some authors have found macroeconomic factors, such as inflation, to be part of the explanation, their impact is quite limited, possibly because of the adequate macroeconomic management done by the Central Bank of Peru (BCRP) since the 1990’s after more liberal interest rate measures were fostered and undertaken.
