Fatigue failure is a recurrent and difficult to predict phenomenon in mechanical systems, it occurs even when a component is subjected to relatively low stresses. Transmission systems are frequently affected by this phenomenon and tend to fail suddenly after a certain period of operation. Cracks in the material microstructure are formed by load repetitions and propagate rapidly through fracture mechanisms until causing the complete failure of the component, which results in a lifetime shorter than that indicated by the product. This has led to the present thesis seeking to analyze the lifetime of the half-shaft in the final drive of the transmission system for a Formula SAE-type vehicle. This system must be capable of transmitting 80 kW of power, for manufacturing three steels will be evaluated (AISI 1045, 4340 and 4140) as raw material, which must be available in the Peruvian market. The components to be used in the system will be determined through the application of the design methodology proposed by Karl T. Ulrich. Fatigue simulations are performed with 99% reliability using the Wöhler curves, assuming a completely elastic behavior of the material and the failure, which will be carried out with the ANSYS nCode DesignLife tool, to determine the lifetime of the halfshaft in the proposed system.
