Peru has around 73 million hectares of forest and is among the ten countries with the largest forest covered area. The latter is threatened by deforestation, which causes great impact on the amount of atmospheric CO2. Quantifying the amount of aboveground biomass is crucial to understand its relationship with climate change. However, there are still major limitations for its precise quantification. For this reason, in this thesis it was proposed to analyze the variation in aboveground biomass in five districts of Madre de Dios for twenty years using secondary information. The objective of this work was to identify trends of variations in above ground biomass of the Peruvian Amazon from 1999 to 2018 in the districts of Huepetuhe, Inambari, Laberinto, Las Piedras and Tahuamanu; in the Madre de Dios region. Using spectral indices and machine learning models it was possible to estimate the above ground biomass for different years in Huepetuhe, Inambari and Laberinto districts. The RMSE% measurements varied between 30.96% and 29.73%, with greater errors occurring in those results above 350 Mg/ha. Large reductions in aboveground biomass were identified in areas with the presence of illegal or informal mining in Huepetuhe and Inambari. In the Laberinto district, both positive and negative variations in aboveground biomass near population centers were identified. Finally, we found that in the Tambopata National Reserve and the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park, the aboveground biomass data remained constant over the years.
