Chia seed, a source of dietary fiber, omega 3, omega 6 and bioactive components, favors the prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases. The objective was to determine the effects of chia consumption on body composition, glucose, lipid profile and atherogenic indices, in university students. Explanatory level research, applied type, and experimental design. The sample consisted of 24 students from the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería, between men and women. Anthropometric evaluations and biochemical examinations were carried out. Three experimental groups were formed, according to the amount of chia consumption: D1 (20 g), D2 (25 g) and D0 (control group). For the statistical analysis of the data, the Shapiro-Wilk tests were used to determine normality, ANOVA and Kruskall-Wallis to find the difference of means. The results in body composition did not show significant variation (p>0.05). Glucose showed a significant increase in D1 (p=0.040) and in D2 (p=0.041), while in D0 it decreased significantly (p=0.026). Regarding the lipid profile, there was no significant variation in the groups; however, HDL increased significantly in D1 (p=0.028) and D2 (p=0.035). The atherogenic indices showed a significant decrease in Castelli I, in D1 (p=0.021) and D2 (p=0.027); Similarly, Castelli II had a significant reduction in D1 (p = 0.004) and D2 (p = 0.036). On the other hand, the triglyceride and plasma atherogenic indices did not show significant variation in the groups. The consumption of chia seed showed positive effects on the lipid profile and atherogenic indices, which highlight its nutritional characteristics.
