This research’s purpose was to understand the effects of written commentary (WC) on the development of academic writing (DAW) of students in the first writing course of the first cycle of 2021. The study paradigm was interpretive; his approach, qualitative; its level, explanatory; and its design, the case study and, as a complement, the grounded theory. The population was made up of students and teachers from two private universities. Sixteen students and five teachers were the sample. Five instruments were developed: for the students, a focus group guide, an interview guide and a rubric; and for teachers, an interview guide and a documentary analysis matrix. The results are divided into two aspects: (1) perceptions in relation to the effects of WC in the DAW, and (2) perceptions vs. practice to understand these effects. Regarding the first, these are the results: (a) teachers and students perceive that WCs are valuable for DAW; (b) they consider that the most beneficial WC are the WC on the structure and on the content, among others; (c) believe that they are essential in all stages of writing, but more so in planning. Regarding the second, these are the results: (a) there are contradictions between the perceptions and the practice of teachers in relation to the types of WC; and (b) teachers and students value WC. In conclusion, teachers and students value WC as a means for DAW, but they must meet a series of characteristics.
