Introduction: Family functionality refers to the set of interpersonal relationships established within the family unit, characterized by affection, care, and mutual support among its members. Common risk behaviors include alcohol consumption, tobacco use, drug consumption, and sexual behaviors. Objective: To determine the relationship between family functionality and risk behaviors among medical interns at the University Andina del Cusco in 2023. Materials and methods: The study was observational, correlational, prospective, and cross-sectional. Convenience sampling was used. The sample consisted of 94 medical interns from the University Andina del Cusco. The survey technique was employed to collect data virtually through a Google form, where participants voluntarily and anonymously took part. Statistical analysis was conducted using the non-parametric Kendall's Tau-b test. Results: A strong inverse correlation was found between Family Functionality and risk behaviors using the Kendall's Tau-b correlation test (Tau-b Kendall = -0.819; p = 0.000). Likewise, a high inverse correlation was found between family functionality and alcohol consumption (Tau-b Kendall = -0.785; p = 0.000), family functionality and tobacco use (Tau-b Kendall = -0.785; p = 0.000), family functionality and drug consumption (Tau-b Kendall = -0.785; p = 0.000), and family functionality and sexual behaviors (Tau-b Kendall = -0.785; p = 0.000). Conclusions: There is an inverse relationship between Family Functionality and risk behaviors. The majority of interns belong to moderately dysfunctional families, where cohesion and harmony are critical areas.
