This research determined whether essential oil of Origanum vulgare “oregano“ leaves had antibacterial effect on strains of Haemophilus influenzae (ATCC 10211) compared with amoxicillin - clavulanic acid at 20 µg/10 µg in an in-vitro study. Four dilutions (100%, 75%, 50% and 25%) were made comparing amoxicillin - clavulanic acid 20 µg and a neutral control with DMSO; 10 repetitions were made for each study group, which showed that the essential oil of Origanum vulgare “oregano“ had zones of inhibition at 100% 17.10 mm SD: 7.38±2.33 , CI 95%[ 16.57-17.63 ] , however this did not exceed the zone of inhibition of amoxicillin - clavulanic acid of 22.50 mm SD: 0.85 ± 2.69 CI 95% [21.89 - 23.11] . Zones of inhibition at 75% were also obtained, of 12mm, not being greater than the pattern given by CLSI (≥ 20mm). ANOVA multivariate analysis was highly significant 0.000 (p<0.001). It is observed that the greater the concentration, the bigger the zone of inhibition. In conclusion, essential oil of Origanum vulgare “oregano“ leaves has antibacterial effect but less than amoxicillin - clavulanic acid, and can be used as an adjunct drug in the treatment of Haemophilus influenzae ATCC 10211.
