Bat communities were evaluated during transitional season (rainy to dry season of 2014) around Amazon Planet Lodge. It’s a private center of tourism and conservation, located in the Tambopata province, region of Madre de Dios at one hour down by the Madre de Dios River from Puerto Maldonado city. The objective was to determine the mercury concentrations in bats in the Madre de Dios basin, in the transition from rainy season to dry season. The individuals of bats were captured using mist nets, which were distributed systematically in the study area. From each individual was collected a sample of hair. These samples were used to measure the mercury concentration using a DMA-80 (Direct Mercury Analyzer). Therefore, 69 individuals of bats were captured, representing 19 species, in 13 genera, two families (Phyllostomidae y Emballonuridae) and order Chiroptera. The species belonged to four trophic guilds (insectivores, carnivores, omnivores and frugivores). The frugivorous bats recorded the major species richness. Besides, the higher values of mercury concentration were found in insectivores and carnivores, while the lower values of mercury concentration were found in omnivores and frugivores. The concentration range, in parts per million (ppm), among the species varied from 0,012 to 2,39. The mercury in the Madre de Dios basin has a history dating back to the 1980s because of the increasing gold search in that area. This study shows that bats are good bioindicators for determining the presence of heavy metals in a trophic scale and all results could be discovered through a noninvasive method, such as measuring mercury in the hair
