Before the global financial crisis of 2008, mining and energy firms outperformed the broader equity markets. At the same time, dividends of these firms reached record levels. After the crisis, while many industries have recovered, mining and energy firms have significantly underperformed the market. However, the dividend payout policy of these industries has barely changed, and in many cases, dividends have increased. In this study, we test the dominating theories about dividend payout policy to explain the underlying reasons behind this puzzling behavior in the mining and energy industries. These results partially support the signaling hypothesis, but are not conclusive with respect to the free cash flow and maturity hypotheses. Because commodity prices play an important role in the performance of these firms, we examine two different scenarios related to the price of commodities: when prices are advancing, and when prices are declining. We find that dividend-increasing firms outperform non-dividend-paying firms by 0.72% in declining markets, and 0.67% per month in advancing markets. These results are statistically and economically significant.
