The removal of chemical pollutants in sewage is possible through the use of aquatic macrophytes, since they present defense mechanisms and are adaptable to various aquatic environments. Macrophytes are considered as a valuable species in the treatment of wastewater, the absorption of pollutants and to determine the negative effect of toxic substances in the water. The objective of this research was to evaluate the percentage of removal of chemical pollutants in domestic sewage using aquatic macrophytes Lemna minor and Pistia stratiotes. The macrophytes were exposed to concentrations of 100% residual water, 50% residual water + 50% natural water and a control with 100% natural water, in a period of 30 days where chemical parameters, growth rate and mortality. The results indicated that the growth rate was optimal in both species, the mortality rate was progressive during the evaluation. The parameters that had the greatest removal with Pistia stratiotes in sewage waters were Nitrogen and Nitrogen Nitrite and with Lemna minor it was Phosphorus, Ammonia Nitrogen and Potassium. In conclusion, the exposure time of macrophytes to sewage induces the removal of chemical pollutants.
