During the second half of the twentieth century, Peru experienced important changes in the ports sector, a context which four new ports had been built, including that of Salaverry. The port was built near the city of Trujillo, in a bay without a natural shelter, this was due to the sustained growth that occurred at that time and the need to improve trade conditions to boost the development of the northern part of the country. To provide calm conditions in the bay, different shelters were built, including the Molo Retenedor in 1973. However, during their designing process, they failed to identify negative consequences that still affect operations inside the port, such as sedimentation, loss of depth, and increased swell. Due to these factors, the port must suspend its activities for up to 91 days per year due to bad weather, and when it is able to operate, it does not have the conditions to efficiently take care of the ships it receives. In the present study, we have analyzed both the port operations and the conditions with which it serves the different types of cargo, identifying two main factors that limit its activities: the direct way in which the types of merchandise are served and the lack of specialized equipment to optimize service times to ships. For this reason, a change to the indirect mode of handling the cargo is proposed, assigning storage areas to the land area that allows reducing the travel distance for the cargo between the dock and the storage warehouse, and the installation of specialized equipment to improve service times. The implementation of these alternatives will be carried out progressively in two phases, so that the transition does not affect the current operation. Finally, it is concluded that with the enforcement of these measures the port will be able to improve service times by 86%, increase project cargo by an average 80%, and expand operational lifespan by up to 31 years.
