During the 1990s, the oil and gas industry provided greater importance to new measurement technologies in production and well testing, and their economic impact on the development of production fields. This led to the development of more precise technologies for measuring the water cut in the different hydrocarbon production processes due to its importance and the need for reliable data. During the operation of an oilwell, several changes in production performance occur progressively over time. However, these progressive changes such as the variation of the water cut, formation of emulsions, and changes in the fluid make it increasingly difficult to take samples and less reliable in the recorded data. These traditional methods of sampling and calculation used also incur in human error. Due to the limitations and uncertainty of traditional methods, the use of a water cut meter with one of the most developed technologies in the industry is proposed, through which measurements with an uncertainty less than ±0.2% absolute error and ±0.05% repeatability can be obtained; thus, considerable reduction or elimination of manual sampling is achieved. The Red Eye near-infrared spectroscopy is one of those technologies that has a solid scientific and engineering technical support, and this technology was used for water cut measurement in Bretaña Field due to its favorable conditions in terms of fluid production. Finally, the present study showed that this technology provides a reliable measurement of water cut in an efficient way in the oil production process of the Bretaña field - Lote 95.
