This research conducts a literature review on the relationship between competition, efficiency, and bank profitability. It analyzes key theoretical frameworks, such as the Structure-Conduct-Performance (SCP) paradigm and the Efficient Structure (ES) theory and examines international studies on how competition and efficiency influence profitability, highlighting the variability of results depending on economic and geographical contexts. Additionally, it reviews key methodologies, including the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM), Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), and the Panzar and Rosse H-statistic. In the Peruvian banking sector, high market concentration is observed alongside indications of increasing competition, operational efficiency improvements, and declining spreads, driven by digitalization and economies of scale. The research concludes that bank profitability is a complex phenomenon requiring an integrated approach to understand its various factors.
