The main objective of this research work is to make known that the relationship between dysfunctional families and the self-esteem of 5th grade students was investigated. The research was carried out using a quantitative approach and a non-experimental design, employing cross-sectional data collection. A population consisting of 60 students and a sample of 38 fifth grade students was established. For data collection, two questionnaires were used, one for each variable, both validated by the judgment of experts on the subject and with a Cronbach's Alpha reliability equal to 0.815 for dysfunctional families and 0.867 for self-esteem, respectively. This research, when determining the relationship between dysfunctional families and self-esteem in 5th grade students of the I.E. 3047 Canada, Comas, 2021, was able to find a confidence level of 95% that, the calculated p = 0.0 < tabular p = 0.05, through the nonparametric Rho Spearman test. This leads us to understand that there is a relationship between both variables, which means that family roles, communication system, family dynamics and academic performance of dysfunctional families are related or tend to be related to the family dimension, personal dimension, social dimension and academic dimension of self-esteem; that is, the better the family condition, the better the self-esteem of the child and/or student. In view of the above, the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternate hypothesis is accepted; consequently, the research hypothesis is accepted, which states that there is a significant relationship between dysfunctional families and self-esteem in 5th grade students of primary school at I.E. 3047 Canada, Comas, 021.
