ABSTRACT Currently in a high percentage of masonry buildings as a constructive element used in the city of Cajamarca, so this research seeks to generate information to be battery resistance data (f'm) for different thicknesses of mortar joint, which are commonly used and are not specified in the Standard E.070. The objective of this research was to determine the influence of the thickness of the mortar joint in resistance to axial compression piles of masonry, using bricks made by hand of the brick La Paccha - El Cerrillo and mortar sand hill the quarry "the Hawk", for it was made 60 piles of bricks in total, 12 for each board thickness, considering: 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 cm. dimensional change, warping, simple compression and not qualifying tests: suction, absorption assays batteries, mortar tests (axial compression), determining the resistance of the bricks (F'B), battery resistance also qualifying tests were conducted (f'm). Classifying the artisanal brick used as type II according to the E.070 standard. Finally the tests conducted in axial compression for the stacks of each thickness it could be concluded that the percentage of the compressive strength of a pile of masonry decreases to 15% for each increase of 1 cm in the thickness of the mortar joint to 4.0 cm.
