A sustainable environment has become increasingly important for human beings due to the climate crisis and the increase of GHG. In Peru, renewable energy projects have been developed for more than 10 years, with the installation of photovoltaic systems, wind power plants among other types of RE, but they are not enough, since most of these large-scale projects are concentrated on the coast. The objective of this project is to evaluate the potential of solar energy in the district of Junin through geographic information systems and determine how much solar energy is required to generate electricity. The methodology used in this research is directly applicable because it incorporates metadata from Global Solar Atlas and Senamhi geoservice data, and also a GIS technique for interpolation of cartographic map data. The data obtained and analyzed from the GSA were direct normal irradiance and photovoltaic potential. The calculations were performed at two geographical points (-11.143506°, -76.058563° and -11.134782°, -76.017014°) corresponding to the study areas. The annual monthly averages for direct normal irradiance correspond to 5.50 kWh/m2 and 5.40 kWh/m2. For the photovoltaic energy potential, values of 4831 kWh and 4771 kWh are obtained. The results obtained indicate a high yield in solar radiation applications for the Junín district, and this is due to the fact that the higher the photovoltaic potential, the more electricity from renewable sources.
