The present research aimed to identify the relationship between the motives and patterns of Instagram use and depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms in university students in Metropolitan Lima. Specifically, it was expected to identify if there were differences in terms of the sociodemographic variables of gender, age (Millennials and Generation Z) and type of Instagram account (Public or Private). The sample consisted of 132 students aged 18 to 33 years (M=22.67; SD=2.68) mostly women (76.4%). The instruments used were the Instagram Motives Questionnaire (IMQ), Instagram Patterns of Use Questionnaire (IUPQ) and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales (DASS-21). The results evidenced that all Instagram usage patterns were significantly related to depression, anxiety, and stress symptomatology. In contrast, few relationships were found between Instagram usage motives and the 3 types of symptomatology. Finally, it was found that there were significant differences in terms of the sociodemographic variables of sex, type of account, and age. In conclusion, it was identified that Instagram, being an image-centered platform, predisposes users to compare themselves with the content they see on the platform, which generates psychological distress. Likewise, the psychological state may be a protective factor against the way of interacting with the platform (patterns) and, therefore, in how the individual is impacted by it. For future research, it is suggested to investigate other ways of measuring Instagram usage patterns as well as whether there are other patterns that contribute to dysfunctional use and therefore to the appearance of symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress in the individual.
