The main objective of this research was to design communication messages to promote parental behavior change for the prevention of childhood burns in mothers of children between 1 and 4 years of age of low socioeconomic level (SES) in Lima, based on exploring the barriers and facilitators of maternal behavior of leaving hot liquids out of the reach of children. For this purpose, a qualitative investigation was carried out in which the participants were made up of two groups, one of 8 professionals with experience with children from Lima and another of 8 mothers of girls and boys from 2 to 4 years old with and without burns. The practices of mothers that facilitated burns in their children were explored. The analysis of the information collected was thematic and deductive (Braun and Clarke, 2006). To do this, the COM-B model (Michie et al., 2011) was used, in such a way that the barriers and facilitators of maternal behavior of leaving hot liquids out of the children's reach were identified. With respect to physical ability, interpersonal skills, previous experience and cues or stimuli in the environment, these play a facilitating role. Similarly, social norms also encourage mothers to place pots of hot liquids out of the reach of their children. Knowledge, habits, the responsibility of our actions and the time factor operate only as barriers for mothers to leave pots with hot liquids out of the reach of children. Finally, attention, memory, emotions, beliefs about consequences, as well as the physical and social context, play roles as both facilitators and barriers in this process. To achieve the second objective, the EAST (Owain et al., 2012) and MINDSPACE (Dolan, 2010) frameworks were used, which allowed the design of communication messages that promote parental behavior change for the prevention of childhood burns. In the formulation of these messages, the theory was considered that highlights that most accidents occur at home, specifically in the kitchen, involving hot liquids and affecting children between 1 and 5 years old. In addition, the limitations mentioned by the participants were taken into account, such as overcrowding in their homes and the low socioeconomic level in which they live. It was also recognized that the unequal distribution of gender responsibilities impacts mothers' ability to prevent accidents.
