The main objective of this study is to analyze the effect of corruption on human development in the countries that make up the Andean Community during the period between 2002 and 2022. To carry out this analysis, a quantitative methodology is employed, using a random effects panel data econometric model. This approach allows a comprehensive evaluation of the relationship between corruption and human development variables over time and among the different constituent countries. Human development, measured through indices such as the Human Development Index (HDI), not only reflects a country’s income level but also encompasses aspects such as life expectancy and education—factors fundamental for generating opportunities within a group of countries united in their objective of comprehensive development. Despite the joint efforts of these countries, the expected results have not been achieved, due to various factors including geographical and infrastructural obstacles, high levels of inequality, insufficient decentralization, and, above all, political tensions and governmental instability detected in recent years in the region. Research on this topic empirically shows that the perception of corruption within this bloc of countries has a minimal impact on their human development. Therefore, understanding how economic policies and macroeconomic conditions affect human development directly provides valuable information on the factors that hinder growth, such as corruption. This insight is crucial for designing public policies aimed at mitigating corruption.
