The study has the objective of knowing the spatial social identities that citizens have built in the Kosñipata district, which is part of Manu National Park’s buffer zone and in the last decade has become scenario of the cocalero movement. The study follows a qualitative, exploratory, and phenomenological approach that applied semi structured interviews to fourteen citizens of Kosñipata, which were selected following a convenience sampling method. The reflexive thematic analysis strategy was used to categorize the interview information and four semi structured interviews were applied as a results validation procedure. Results differentiate two categories of spatial social identity corresponding to two groups of citizens whose self-concept is influenced by the presence of the institutions in charge and groups linked to drug trafficking. The interviewees ingroup perceive their territorial symbolic appropriation more positively as they have more identification towards Kosñipata and concern over the district’s environmental patrimony and future. The outgroup of citizens that migrated to work with the coca leaf in Kosñipata is perceived with prejudice for being linked to drug trafficking and for their symbolic appropriation of the territory as a resource to profit from.
