Objective: To determine if there is an association between Helicobacter pylori infection and the presence of Irritable Bowel Syndrome in adult patients. Material and methods: An analytical, observational, retrospective, cross-sectional study was carried out in which 260 patients were included, according to selection criteria which were divided into 2 groups: patients diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (n = 65) and patients without him (n = 195); applying the odds ratio prevalence and the chi-square statistical test for the study of association between H. pylori infection and irritable bowel syndrome. Results: The frequency of Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with irritable bowel syndrome was 43/65 = 66%; the frequency of infection by Helicobacter pylori in patients without irritable bowel syndrome was 84/195 = 43%; therefore, Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with irritable bowel syndrome with a prevalence odds ratio of 2.58 which was statistically significant (p <0.05). Conclusion: Helicobacter pylori infection is an associated factor for Irritable Bowel Syndrome in adult patients. Key words: Helicobacter pylori, associated factor, Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
