Objective: Our purpose was to determine if gestational diabetes is a factor associated with retinopathy of prematurity in the Bethlehem Hospital of Trujillo.. Material and Methods: A case-control study was carried out. In a sample of 126 preterm infants, who met the selection criteria, who were divided into two groups, 42 neonates with retinopathy of prematurity in the case group and 84 neonates without retinopathy of prematurity in the control group, applied the chi-square test, TStudent and Odds ratio. Results: The frequency of gestational diabetes in mothers of neonates with retinopathy of prematurity was 20%. The frequency of gestational diabetes in mothers of neonates without retinopathy of prematurity was 7%. Gestational diabetes is a risk factor for retinopathy of prematurity with an odds ratio of 3.05 which was significant (p <0.05). In the multivariate analysis, the significance of the risk for the variables gestational diabetes, mechanical ventilation and oxygen therapy under study in relation to the onset of retinopathy of prematurity was verified. Conclusions: Gestational diabetes is a factor associated with retinopathy of prematurity in the Bethlehem Hospital in Trujillo.
