OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate if the induction of labor with oxytocin is a risk factor associated with puerperal depression. MATERIAL AND METHOD: An analytical, observational, retrospective study of cases and controls was carried out, which evaluated 208 puerperal women from the Belén de Trujillo Hospital, according to established inclusion and exclusion criteria divided into two groups: with or without puerperal depression, the odds ratio was calculated and the chi-square test. RESULTS: Of a total of 208 puerperal women, the average maternal age was 27.2 in puerperal women with depression, and of 26.7 in puerperal women without depression, the distribution of induction of labor with oxytocin in puerperal women with puerperal depression was 27% and Not 73% The distribution of induction of labor in puerperal women without puerperal depression was 15%. Likewise, the findings observed in the multivariate analysis identify the condition of the puerpera who underwent induction of labor with oxytocin (OR 2.3 IC 95% [1,4- 4,1]) and pregestational obesity (OR 1, 9 95% CI [1,2- 3,5]) as risk factors associated with puerperal depression. In contrast, arterial hypertension (OR 1.6 CI 95% [0.8- 3.1]), diabetes mellitus (OR 1.8 CI 95% [0.7- 3.3]), provenance (OR 1 , 2 95% CI [0.5-1.1]) are not recognized as risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: Induction of labor with oxytocin and pregestational obesity are risk factors for developing puerperal depression.
