Objective: To determine if family dysfunction is a factor associated with asthmatic crisis in children with bronchial asthma treated at Belen Trujillo Hospital. Material and Methods: An analytical, prospective, case-control study was performed. The study population consisted of 52 children aged 5 to 13 years with a diagnosis of bronchial asthma; which were divided into 2 groups: case group (with asthmatic crisis in the last 6 months) and control group (without asthmatic crisis in the last 6 months); the odds ratio and chi-square test were calculated. Results: The frequency of familial dysfunction in children with bronchial asthma and asthmatic crisis was 35 %. The frequency of familial dysfunction in children with bronchial asthma without asthmatic crisis was 12%. Family dysfunction is a factor associated with asthmatic crisis in children with bronchial asthma with an odds ratio of 4.1 which was significant (p <0.05). The average of the family Apgar score was significantly lower in the group of children with asthmatic crisis compared to the group of children without asthmatic crisis. Conclusions: Family dysfunction is a factor associated with asthmatic crisis in children with bronchial asthma treated at Belen Trujillo Hospital. Children with familial dysfunction have 4 times more risk of making asthma attacks than children without family dysfunction.
