To determine whether maternal risk factors are associated with neonatal morbidity and mortality in Hospital Belen at Trujillo. Methods: We performed an observational study, retrospective, analytical, case and controls. The study population was 186 recent born infants, who were divided into 2 groups according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, the cases (recent born infants with morbidity and mortality) and controls (recent born infants without morbidity and mortality). Relative risk, confidence intervals and p values were calculated. The statistical test Chi square using SPSS version 23.0 was used. Results: The young maternal age of 15 years and older than 35 years are associated 22.7% and 10.7%, respectively, recent born infants with morbidity and mortality (RR 9.68, CI 95% = 3.2-29.3 and a value p <0.05). Pre pregnancy overweight and obesity are associated in 29.2% and 9.4%, respectively, recent born infants with morbidity and mortality (RR 2.49, CI 95% = 1.1-5.9 and a value of p <0.05). Chronic hypertension is associated by 7.5% to recent born infants with morbidity and mortality (RR 1.5, CI = 0.7-3.3 95% and a value of p> 0.05). Conclusions: Maternal risk factors: extreme age, pre pregnancy overweight and obesity are associated with neonatal morbidity and mortality at Hospital BELEN during the period January - December 2015.
