To determine the factors associated with self - medication with NSAIDs in outpatients of the outpatient surgery clinic of the Trujillo Regional Teaching Hospital (HRDT) during the period of March 2017. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An observational, analytical, cross-sectional, and prospective study was carried out, due to the nature of the research, a population study was carried out, 300 patients were referred to the external surgery office, all of them were distributed in two groups according to their Self-medicate or not. Chi square was used for the analysis of the results. RESULTS: Of the 300 patients surveyed, 284 (94.7%) answered that they were selfmedicated; Of this group the average age was 47.91 ± 16.39; It was found that 53.87% of the patients who self-medicate were women (p <0.05). With regard to the level of education, occupation, monthly income and consumption of alcoholic beverages; p was found to be <0.05. Self-medication was higher in those patients whose income ranged from 750 - 1500 (58.10%), in those who are employed and those who do not have higher education. As for age, marital status and physical activity were not related to selfmedication. Headache was the main annoyance among those who self-medicate (57.39%). 47.53% of people who self-medicated did when they considered their discomfort to be mild (p <0.05). The media that most influenced the acquisition of NSAIDs was television (p <0.05). While the persons who influenced the patients to acquire them were the pharmacist (54.58%) (p<0.05). The most commonly acquired NSAIDs were naproxen and ibuprofen. The most common reason for self-medication was that their discomfort was mild (35.92%). 35.7% consumed at least 3 NSAIDs in the last six months. CONCLUSIONS: Self-medication with NSAIDs in ambulatory outpatient surgery was high. There is an association between self-medication with NSAIDs and sex, educational level, monthly income, consumption of alcoholic beverages, occupation, degree of pain, social and media influence. There was no association between self-medication with NSAIDs and age, marital status, and physical activity.
