To determine the correlation between the number of rib fractures and the development of pneumonia in elderly patients treated at the Hospital III ESSALUD Chimbote during the years 2009-2013. Methods: Observational study of prospective cohort was conducted. The study population consisted of 111 patients according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: The average age was 70 05 ± 7.9 years with limits between 62 and 94 years, male to female ratio was 2.96: 1 with a total of 83 males (74.8%) and 28 females (25.2%), to stratify the number arch fractured rib 97 patients with less than 3 fractured arches and 14 patients with 3 or more committed costal arches was found. The hemithorax committed was mostly right (70.3%) and the presence of pneumonia secondary to trauma was 10.8%. It was found that 8 persons of the total study population with 3 or more rib fractures developed pneumonia as a complication while less than 3 rib fractures pneumonia occurred in only 33.3%. Conclusions: Patients who had 3 or more fractured costal arches have increased risk of pneumonia as a complication. The study presented a p <0.001 value which shows statistically significant. Keywords: Rib fractures, pneumonia, elderly patients.
