Atrial fibrillation is considered a common cardiac arrhythmia in the adult population, with a high mortality rate due to ischemic cerebrovascular disease, due to cardioembolic events. Objective: To establish whether left atrial dilation is a risk factor for atrial fibrillation in adults with ischemic stroke at the Víctor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital, Trujillo, from 2019 to 2023. Material and Methods: Observational, retrospective, analytical, case-control study, with data collection from 93 people with ischemic cerebrovascular disease; where the IBM SPSS Statistics 25 statistical program will be used for the analysis, showing the processing of two variables with the risk measure of the OR, with its 95% confidence interval and the Pearson Chi Square test with a significance level of 5% (p < 0.05). Results: 31 patients with atrial fibrillation and 62 without atrial fibrillation were studied. 90.3% of those with atrial fibrillation had the risk factor and only 61.3% of those without atrial fibrillation had the risk factor. The OR of fibrillation due to left atrial dilatation was 5.89 (95% CI 1.61-21.53; P=0.004). The OR of atrial fibrillation due to diastolic dysfunction, systolic dysfunction and mitral regurgitation was 4.44 (p=0.017); 8.75 (p=0.003) and 4.01 (p=0.009) respectively. Conclusions: Left atrial dilatation is a risk factor for atrial fibrillation in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease. Keywords: left atrial dilation, atrial fibrillation, ischemic cerebrovascular disease.
