INTRODUCTION: The association between caffeine consumption and symptoms of anxiety in people who participate in sports has been explored in previous research. But, there is little scientific evidence on the subject, developed in the local environment and under the context of social isolation by COVID-19. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the association between caffeine consumption and symptoms of anxiety in people who participate in sports aged 18-50 from Metropolitan Lima-2021, in the context of social isolation by COVID-19, considering adjustment for third variables such as age, sex, district area, type of sport, presence of injury, NSE, type of athlete and frequency of sport. MATERIALS AND METHODS: a cross-sectional study was conducted, based on a virtual and anonymous survey (Frequency of Food Consumption of CENAN-Adapted), under the focus of snowball sampling in a total of 163 people who participate in sports. RESULTS: The 65.7% respondents presented a high consumption of caffeine (>400 mg a day) and only a 37.4% had symptoms of anxiety. No association was found between symptoms of anxiety and caffeine consumption in the study population in both crude Poisson regressions (high consumption vs. low: PR=1.19; 95% CI: 0.68-2.09; p-value=0.533 and normal consumption vs. low: PR=0.96; 95% CI: 0.45-2.06; p-value=0.917) and adjusted (high consumption vs. low: aPR=1.27; 95% CI: 0.71-2.29; p-value=0.421 and normal consumption vs. low: aPR=0.66; 95% CI: 0.33-1.32; p-value=0.240); but yes with sex (male vs. female: PR=0.46; 95% CI: 0.32-0.67; p-value<0.001 and aPR=0.48; 95% CI: 0.31-0.73; p-value=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: No association was found between caffeine consumption and symptoms of anxiety in the study population. However, males showed a 52 % reduction in the prevalence of anxiety symptoms.
