This research project is based on improving the natural gas pipeline installation process to increase labor productivity using the Lean Manufacturing methodology. A diagnosis of the current situation of the company under study was carried out in which a labor productivity of work line 4 of 0.99 meters per man-hour (m/hh) was identified compared to the other work lines that have an average of 1.27 meters per man-hour (m/hh). In this case, the labor productivity of work line 4 is lower than the average of the others by 0.28 meters per man-hour (m/hh). Likewise, labor productivity for laying gas pipes is 1.57m/HH according to the US Department of Labor. Therefore, work line 4 was taken as a pilot to improve its productivity. To improve labor productivity, Lean Manufacturing tools were developed and applied: work standardization, production leveling and SMED (acronym for Single Minute Exchange of Die). The implementation of these tools contributed positively to the company under study, since its average labor productivity increased to 1.43 meters per work hour and its level of compliance in the operational or execution process increased by 48% by 2022.
