The present study evaluates whether the impact of food expenditure diversification affects the chronic disease status of children as a consequence of malnutrition. Existing literature states that food diversity is an indirect measure of diet quality, and the degree to which households' nutritional needs are met depends on economic decisions to access a variety of foods and this influences the health and nutritional status of household members. The analysis was conducted at the national level with data provided by the ENAHO in households where minors were present, whose study period was 2019. The method of Least Squares in Two Stages (MC2E) was adopted to identify the causal effect of the variables in question. Likewise, two estimations were carried out in which households that fully finance their consumption basket with money and those households that acquired their food basket with another source of access, as well as self-consumption, self-supply among others, were included. he results revealed that, according to both estimates, the diversification of food expenditures through the Simpson Index (SI), whether partially or totally financed by households, had a negative impact on children's chronic disease status, as consumption of a diverse food basket leads to improved nutritional status and reduced likelihood of disease. Finally, the research identified diversification as a promising measurement tool to ensure food security and health well-being in the nutritional economy, to understand the composition of household food expenditure and the determinants that may influence access to a food basket.
