The present research aims to determine the possibility of improving the mechanical properties of adobe walls by adding totora fibers in their construction and to verify the drifts caused by an earthquake in a house located in the village of San Isidro, Cañete province, using the Etabs software. Currently, adobe is widely used in the coastal areas of the country due to its cost-effectiveness and accessibility to the rural population. However, these constructions, due to their empirical treatment and lack of compliance with established regulations during their construction, pose a danger to the occupants, as they exhibit constant structural failures. This study proposes to reduce these issues by incorporating natural totora fiber in the production of adobe walls. Totora fibers were incorporated into adobe bricks, adobe blocks, and mortar, on which compression and tension tests were conducted to analyze the mechanical properties of these samples, comparing the results with the standard adobe used in the locality. The results from the samples of adobe reinforced with different percentages of fibers (0%, 0.4%, 0.7%, and 1%) showed that the sample with 0.7% totora fibers yielded the best results in terms of compression resistance and tension tests. Furthermore, these values exceeded the standard values established by the E.080 code. The drifts evaluated in the house using the studied adobe configurations were reduced as the percentage of totora fiber in adobe increased.
