In the last decade, several studies have reported the existence of body image dissatisfaction in athletes and university students. As a consequence, this fact affects their muscular perception, since it does not coincide with reality. Muscle Dysmorphia (MD) is an obsessive-compulsive disorder recently subcategorized as a body dysmorphic disorder. Therefore, the objective was to relate physical self-concept (PA) and MD in university athletes from Lima, Peru. Also, to analyze the relationship between PA and MD, according to sociodemographic variables such as sex, type of sport, frequency of days of practice. A total of 170 college athletes between the ages of 18 and 25 (X̅ 20.9, SD = 2.31), who completed the Muscle Appearance Satisfaction Scale (MASS) and the Physical Self-Concept Questionnaire (PAQ), participated in the study. The present study employed Spearman's statistical test for psychometric correlational analysis, which obtained significant negative correlations in almost all dimensions of the PAQ and MASS. PAQ independent variables predict the presence of MD symptomatology (p < .001). In the linear regression assessment, 27.3% predicted the variance of MD symptomatology. The prevalence of MD symptomatology was 5.3%. Finally, it is concluded that the greater the PA, the greater the presence of MD symptomatology.
