Nowadays, the CEO position is considered a key piece in the performance of companies, their image, skills, leadership and ethical values directly influence their results in a positive or negative way. Therefore, the following question should be asked: What is the importance of the CEO and how does he/she influence organizations? This paper seeks to explore the various opinions on this subject by providing management with a tool for analysis. For this purpose, a search and selection of academic articles, books and related qualified journals was carried out. During the review and analysis of the articles selected for this study, controversies were found with respect to various topics that were considered relevant. Gaps regarding opportunities to reach the CEO position according to gender (male/female) were analyzed. Likewise, we explored the types of leadership that influence the management of a CEO (transformational/transactional/narcissistic) and its characteristics according to the type of company (family/non-family), HR management in the choice of the CEO (internal/external) and, finally, the positive and/or negative influence on CEO motivation according to the proposed incentive scheme (compensation theory), based on their achievements.
