Diversity in the composition of the board has become greater focus in the last twenty years as a fundamental tool in corporate governance. However, it has been identified that in most research it is assumed that diversity is focused solely on "gender", which limits the analysis of the benefits that other characteristics of diversity bring to the composition of the board in the business management. Throughout this research, we have framed our study around seven characteristics of diversity: age, education, experience, gender, independence, demographics, culture, and ethnicity. The objective of this paper is to identify the benefits that diversity brings to the composition of the board. To this end, it has been considered the different characteristics of the identified diversities while reviewing the sources. In that way, based on the analysis of the sources, it is concluded that they provide to the board an improvement in the advisory function to the general management, provide an improvement in the decision-making process and benefit the perception of the corporate image. All this contributes improving the performance of the company creating value for shareholders and their stakeholders. According to the reviewed papers, there are other relevant diversity characteristics to consider in the composition of the board. For this reason, the Shareholders should include them in the particular structure of their boards, based on their purpose and the different benefits that each of these characteristics can bring in creating value for society in general.
