Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases are the fourth cause of mortality and morbidity in the population. Within the group, arterial hypertension (HTA) is considered the most frequent in the world population. This pathology, characterized by chronic increase in blood pressure in a way maintained over time, can be prevented by modifying risk factors, mainly those characteristic of primary HTA. The objective of the study is to determine if there is an association between the consumption of fruits and vegetables with the prevalence of hypertension in adults of 2017. Material and methods: Descriptive observational cross-sectional study based on data from the cross-sectional study "National Demographic and Family Health Survey-ENDES, 2017". Adults from 18 to 59 years of age were included. The exposure variable was consumption of fruits and vegetables, defined based on self-report based on the WHO STEPs questions, the number of fruits and vegetables was considered, and the number of days (during the week) that was consumed. To define HTA, both the HTA self-report and the blood pressure measurement were taken into account. Thus, for the present study, AHT was considered to those subjects who: had systolic pressure≥ 140 mmHg and / or diastolic pressure≥ 90 mmHg or had a previous diagnosis of AHT; as non-hypertensive, the person who had an average systolic pressure <140 mmHg and an average diastolic pressure <90 mmHg was considered and had never been diagnosed as HTA. Results: 27332 participants were evaluated, the average age was 36.411.69, 51.72% were women and 48.3% were men. The prevalence of AHT was 15% men and 10% in women. Regarding the consumption of fruits and vegetables, it was found that 94.5% of the population fails to consume the 5 recommended portions. Conclusions: In the study, no association was found between the consumption of fruits and vegetables and the prevalence of arterial hypertension in adults. Despite this, according to what was studied, the consumption of fruits and vegetables in the daily diet was considered of utmost importance, as well as the adoption of more habits that allow the population to have a healthy lifestyle.
