Introduction: Social responsibility is a fundamental pillar in healthcare, aimed at promoting equity, health education, and participation in public policies. In medical education, this principle seeks to sensitize professionals to health inequalities, especially in rural contexts. Tools such as volunteering and service-based learning are effective in developing clinical, ethical, and leadership competencies, benefiting both communities and the holistic growth of medical students. Objectives: This study aims to explore how volunteering influences the professionalism of medical students in externships and internships at Peruvian universities. Sociodemographic characteristics and levels of professionalism will be analyzed between those who participate in volunteering and those who do not, in addition to evaluating professional value formation and understanding the motivations and barriers students face in engaging in these activities. Materials and Methods: A quantitative, cross-sectional, and comparative design will be used, involving students from six universities, both public and private. The sample will include students with at least six months of volunteering experience. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire addressing sociodemographic aspects, professionalism assessment, and factors related to volunteering. Statistical analysis will be performed using Stata software, with a descriptive and comparative approach. Conclusions: The findings highlight the positive impact of volunteering on the development of professionalism, promoting values such as responsibility, altruism, and ethical commitment. However, significant barriers, such as lack of time and resources, limit participation. Despite these challenges, volunteering is consolidated as a transformative experience, and its promotion is recommended to strengthen the ethical and professional training of future doctors.
