The study evaluated the efficiency of the Taboada WWTP, which is considered the largest of its kind in South America, with an operational capacity handling an average flow of 14 m³/s and a maximum flow of 20.3 m³/s. This plant treats wastewater from over 4 million people in Lima Metropolitana and Callao. The environmental impact on the receiving body was assessed by analyzing physicochemical and microbiological parameters, comparing water quality before and after the treatment process. During the period from February to April 2024, a representative analysis was conducted over 31 days, measuring key parameters such as COD, BOD5, ammoniacal nitrogen, Kjeldahl nitrogen, oils and greases, free cyanide, total metals, thermotolerant coliforms, TSS, pH, turbidity, and temperature were measured to evaluate treatment efficiency. The results show that the Taboada WWTP achieves significant removal in several physicochemical parameters: oils and fats (24.2%), BOD5 (23.7%), COD (26.6%), TSS (26.1%). However, there are differences in the removal efficiency for different contaminants, such as ammoniacal nitrogen (17.6%). For the removal of microbiological contaminants, such as total coliforms (32.6%) and thermotolerant coliforms (31.5%). The removal is low for some metals, such as silica (11.4%) and potassium (11.6%), and better for manganese (30.7%) and iron (31.6%). When comparing the effluent results with the national regulations' allowable limits, it was found that the plant meets the standards for pH and temperature. However, the levels of thermotolerant coliforms, TSS, BOD5, COD, oils, and fats exceed the permitted limits, indicating the need to improve the removal efficiency for these contaminants. The impact of discharge on the receiving body was analyzed through monitoring in the coastal and marine zones. Although the physicochemical and microbiological parameters are within the limits established by current environmental regulations, it is essential to enhance treatment to achieve full compliance. This includes improving the removal of heavy metals and managing microbiological parameters, which are crucial for protecting aquatic ecosystems and public health.
