Taenia solium is an endemic cestode in Peru; its hosts are pigs and humans. Cysticercus (larval phase) transforms and matures into an adult worm (disseminative phase) in the human intestine. This transformation starts with the evagination of the scolex, which allows the parasite to adhere to the intestinal wall, where it grows to form a strobila composed of proglottids. The development of the adult worm involves proliferation events, cell migration, and reorganization of muscle tissue. These processes have been studied in cestodes, such as Hymenolepis, Echinococcus, and Mesocestoides, but have been scarcely explored in T. solium. Understanding the development of this parasite can help to identify therapeutic targets. In this study, the expression of key genes in T. solium associated with cell proliferation (h2b), myogenesis (myoD), and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT; snail-1), related to cell migration, was compared before and after the evagination of the scolex. RT-qPCR revealed that the highest expression of myoD and h2b occurred prior to evagination. snail-1 expression was lower at this stage than after evagination, suggesting greater cell migration towards the new regions of the evaginated cysticercus. This is the first study in which markers of myogenesis, EMT, and cell proliferation were tested as part of critical processes for the development of T. solium. Knowing the role of these mechanisms and their transcription factors (MyoD and Snail-1) contributes to understanding the biology of the parasite.
